Most Expensive Michelin Restaurants in the World [2022 Update]
Fine dining restaurants are feeling the pinch of inflation too. Last month, Masa, the famed NYC sushi restaurant, made headlines after it hiked its prices from $800 to $950 per person, excluding taxes and drinks.
Masa NYC was not the only premier restaurant to update its prices in 2022. So we decided to update our ranking of the most expensive Michelin-starred restaurants published in November 2021.
Prior to the price increase, Masa was already the most expensive restaurant in North America and the 5th most expensive Michelin restaurant in the world. Since this increase, Masa now ranks as the 3rd most expensive Michelin-starred restaurant in the world, after Ibiza’s Sublimotion and Shanghai’s Ultraviolet by Paul Pairet.
Amsterdam’s Ciel Bleu raised the prices of its premium caviar-centric tasting menu by a full 100 euros. The lavish menu now costs 595 euros (roughly $664), which ranks Ciel Bleu as one of the world’s five most expensive Michelin restaurants and the second most expensive in Europe. Last year Ciel Bleu ranked 11th worldwide.
France’s most expensive restaurant, Guy Savoy, also increased its prices, albeit more modestly. The top-priced menu at Guy Savoy costs now 570 euros, up from 530 euros last year. Guy Savoy ranks now as the 6th most expensive Michelin restaurant in the world, up 3 spots compared to the end of last year.
The Alchemist in Copenhagen, Denmark’s most expensive restaurant, increased its prices by a similar amount: 300 DKK or roughly $44. Its top tasting menu now costs 3,800 DKK or roughly $570.
In neighboring Sweden, Frantzen, the one and only 3-starred Michelin restaurant in the country, has also gotten more expensive this year. Its top-priced menu costs 4,200 SEK, up from 3,800 SEK last year, which equals roughly $42 more. Frantzen ranks just outside the top 15 priciest Michelin restaurants worldwide.
Japan’s Kikunoi Honten increased the price for its top-priced menu by 1,000 yen, but a weaker local currency made its prices actually more affordable to USD holders.
On the other hand, some restaurants have dropped their most expensive offering from their menu. This is not uncommon, as some high-priced menus are based on seasonal ingredients which are not offered throughout the year.
Tokyo’s Joël Robuchon and Azabu Kadowaki are two such examples, which, combined with a much weaker local currency, have made their top-priced menus substantially more affordable compared to late last year.
Hélène Darroze at the Connaught also left the top 15 as its exclusive truffle-based menu is no longer available, while the top-priced menu (i.e. seasonal spring menu) at Arpege costs just 380 euros, down from 460 euros late last year.
New Entries in the Top 15
Shoukouwa, the 2-starred sushi restaurant in Singapore, enters the top 15 of the most expensive Michelin-starred restaurants in the world. The Chef’s Dinner Omakase menu will set you back S$650 or roughly $480 USD.
Singapore is no stranger to high-priced fine dining, as the Southeast Asian country ranked 2nd worldwide in our ranking of the most expensive fine dining destinations.
The French Laundry, Thomas Keller’s legendary restaurant, also makes it into the top 15 with a $500 dinner served in one of the restaurant’s three historic dining rooms.
If you’re ready to spend a little more, the restaurant organizes some special dinner parties where you can enjoy the most luxurious ingredients and dishes. For example, on May 19th you can book a seat for an exclusive Miyazaki Wagyu, one of the most expensive steaks in the world, and Regiis Ova Caviar tasting menu that will set you back $1,200.
Methodology
Chef’s Pencil has analyzed the menus of over 450 Michelin-starred restaurants in high-priced cities such as Tokyo, Paris, New York or San Francisco. For restaurants where prices were not easily available, we relied on media reporting, the Michelin Guide or restaurant reservation services such as Table All.
We ranked the restaurants with the highest priced full tasting menus. The top tasting menu is usually an 8-12 course served at dinner, with some restaurants offering multiple menus that can be priced very differently. For this study we have selected the most expensive full-tasting course, which for some restaurants can be up to $300 more expensive than other courses.
While Sublimotion hasn’t yet won any Michelin stars, the restaurant’s Head Chef and one of its founders – Paco Roncero – has two Michelin stars under his belt.
